The Beneo Motors Cobra 49cc is a petrol mini quad designed in the style of a working utility ATV. A quad with a practical purpose.

Most children's quads are styled after racing machines. The Cobra follows a different model: the utility ATVs used on farms and forest tracks. The two cargo racks are the clearest sign of this.

This changes how children use it. Instead of only riding in circles, they can transport things: firewood for the fire pit, tools to the far end of the garden, a backpack on a trip across a field. The riding gains a purpose. Children who lose interest in riding fast in circles often keep using a quad that has a practical function.

Two safety systems with two different functions

The Cobra has two independent safety systems. One is set before the ride begins. The other acts only in an emergency.

The adjustable speed limiter is a screw on the throttle housing. It physically limits how far the throttle can open. When the screw is tightened, the quad cannot exceed walking speed, no matter how hard the rider presses the throttle. As the child gains confidence, the screw can be loosened step by step. This is a mechanical limit, not an electronic setting, so there is nothing to reset and nothing that can fail. One machine therefore covers both a careful first ride and a confident rider one season later.

The engine cut-off cord uses the same principle as the safety cords on jet skis. A coiled cord is attached to the rider's wrist or clothing at one end and to a switch on the quad at the other end. If the rider leaves the seat for any reason, the cord pulls the switch and the engine stops immediately. The quad does not continue without the rider. There is also a stop switch on the handlebar, within the rider's reach. We recommend attaching the cord before every ride.

The correct size for a first quad

On a machine for beginners, the correct size matters more than the engine power. The Cobra is small enough for a child to control and stable enough to feel predictable. It is also light enough for one adult to lift it into a car boot or a trailer, so the riding location does not have to be your own garden.

Before the first ride, check these three points while your child is sitting on the quad:

• both feet rest flat on the footboards, with the knees relaxed and not raised
• both hands reach the brake levers without stretching and without changing the grip
• the thumb throttle can be pressed through its full range without turning the wrist forward

If all three points are correct, the quad is the right size for your child. The Cobra is intended for supervised riding only, always with a helmet and protective equipment.

The engine and the drive system

The single-cylinder air-cooled 2-stroke engine is the classic mini quad engine. It is light and mechanically simple, and it delivers its power in the upper part of the rev range. This means the child can hear and feel the power increasing gradually instead of receiving it suddenly. CDI ignition controls the spark timing electronically, so there are no contact points that require adjustment.

Power is transferred to the rear axle through a fully automatic centrifugal clutch. Below a certain engine speed the clutch remains disengaged, so the quad can stand still with the engine running. When the rider presses the throttle, the clutch engages gradually by itself. There is no gear lever and no clutch lever. The rider operates only a thumb throttle and two brake levers.

The final drive is by chain, in the standard T8F size used on mini quads. The chain is the component that requires attention first, and this is intentional: a chain is inexpensive, widely available, and can be tensioned or replaced in a few minutes.

The cargo racks and their practical use

Both racks are moulded plastic platforms mounted on steel supports. The front rack is positioned above the bumper and the rear rack behind the seat. Their size is suitable for items a child will realistically carry: a bag, a jacket, a picnic, a few pieces of firewood, a ball.

Two points are important. First, the maximum load of 60 kg applies to the whole machine, which means the rider and the cargo together. A heavier child therefore leaves less capacity for luggage. Second, every load must be secured properly. On a light quad, a load that moves during a turn affects stability much more than on a full-size machine. For this reason we recommend keeping elastic straps together with the quad.

Brakes, suspension and tyres

Both axles use disc brakes instead of drum brakes. Drum brakes lose braking power when they become hot, and also when they become wet or filled with mud. These are exactly the conditions in which a quad is used. Disc brakes release water and dirt as the wheel rotates, so the brake lever responds in the same way on the tenth ride of the afternoon as on the first one. Both brakes are operated by hand levers on the handlebar. There is no foot pedal that a beginner would have to search for in a difficult situation.

At the front there are two coil-over shock absorbers, each working with its own swing arm, which allows the wheels to move independently over ruts and roots. At the rear, a single mono shock performs the same function for the axle. The purpose is not only comfort. A child who is shaken by the terrain becomes tense and presses the throttle too hard, while a child who sits calmly can steer and brake correctly.

The 13-inch off-road tyres are slightly wider at the rear than at the front. This gives the Cobra its stable stance and its traction on loose surfaces. The deep tread pattern grips grass, gravel and soil instead of sliding across the surface.

Fuel and the running-in period

The Cobra runs on a mixture of petrol and 2-stroke oil in a ratio of 1:25, which is 40 ml of oil per litre of petrol. Never use petrol without oil. An incorrect mixture is the most common cause of damage to a 2-stroke engine. Prepare the mixture in a clean canister, not directly in the tank, and prepare only the quantity you will use.

Ride the first tank of fuel gently. Change the throttle position frequently, do not hold the throttle fully open, and let the engine cool down between rides. This short period of care determines whether the engine will serve for several seasons.

Where the quad may be used

The Cobra is an off-road machine. The headlight is a decorative element and does not produce light, so the quad must be used only in good daylight. The Cobra has no indicators and no registration plate, and it is not homologated for public roads anywhere in the EU. It is intended for private land, closed courses and off-road tracks, always with the permission of the landowner. Local regulations differ between countries and municipalities, so we recommend checking the rules that apply in your area before the first ride.

Everyday use and maintenance

A tubular steel frame and a ground clearance of 140 mm allow the Cobra to handle demanding terrain. The moulded front guard protects the machine from the impacts that a beginner's quad inevitably receives. The electric start makes it possible to start the engine with a key, and the pull start remains available as a backup if the battery is discharged.

Regular maintenance is deliberately simple: check the chain, check the tyre pressure, prepare the fuel mixture and ride. Spare parts are held in our own European warehouse, so a worn chain or brake pad can be replaced quickly.
